Preconception to Post-Natal
A special interest for me is working with women and their partners during what can be a joyful time, a stressful time or a devastating time. I enjoy being able to work with individuals or couples, in a safe and secure environment, to discuss concerns regarding conceiving and raising a family. Preconception counselling can be a highly valuable way of communicating concerns, hopes and fears, and being able to hear your partners.
For some it’s about coping with fertility difficulties. Whether it’s a physical barrier that is making it difficult for you to conceive or an unknown reason, difficulties conceiving can place a lot of stress on you and your relationship. Often you feel alone and as if you are on an emotional rollercoaster. If you choose to have medical intervention, by means of IVF or similar, the financial commitment is considerable, just adding to the stress. Couple or individual counselling may help to open up conversations and share emotions, alleviating stress and loneliness.
For others, making decisions about fostering, adoption or termination is a difficult time in life that requires both personal and professional support. Talking your decision through with a Psychologist who is non-judgemental and supportive can be useful before and after making decisions regarding your pregnancy.
Later, counselling may be useful if you are one of the many women who suspect they may be, or who are, suffering with post-natal depression. This may be detected by your doctor, child health nurse, partner, yourself, or you might just worry that somethings not right. Early intervention is always best in order to reduce the impact on you and your relationship with your baby.
At any time, from preconception to post natal, depression and anxiety can develop or worsen. It is important to get professional support to assist you to cope.
